General Summary of Position:
The professional nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive care in an ambulatory setting for patients in Pediatric Hematology Oncology. The key tasks and responsibilities include assessment of physical and psychosocial needs, patient education, and the administration of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and blood products. The nurse develops a plan of care, evaluates the patient's response to interventions, and implements appropriate changes. The nurse also assists in symptom management, coordinates internal and external resources, triages unexpected patient visits, and facilitates communication between all members of the healthcare team. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, RN. BSN preferred.
  • EXPERIENCE: Minimum of five years of experience in oncology; ambulatory care experience preferred.
  • LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Current D.C. licensure as a Registered Nurse. Oncology certification preferred.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: Chemotherapy certification strongly preferred. Excellent phlebotomy skills.

Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Performs initial and ongoing assessment of a designated patient population's physical, psychosocial, and educational needs. Identifies goals, develops a plan of care, and evaluates the patient's response to interventions.
  2. Provides the patient and family/significant other with information (oral, written, or audio-visual) regarding diagnosis, treatment, potential side effects, symptom management, and resources available within and outside MGUH. This may be face-to-face or via the phone.
  3. Administration of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and blood products according to policy and procedure. Obtains blood samples from central venous access devices according to policy and procedure.
  4. Provides psychosocial support to patient/family/significant other throughout their care experience. The nurse identifies and coordinates resources for the patient, i.e., Psycho-Oncology Program, counseling services, support groups.
  5. Supports biomedical research at the Lombardi Cancer Research Center through specimen collection, patient education, and continuous review of current research and new technologies.
  6. The nurse contributes to his/her own professional growth and development through attendance at national and/or regional conferences, reading and sharing current literature, and identifying knowledge or skill needs.
  7. Triages patients who "walk in" to the outpatient department. Identifies and prioritizes needs, initiates appropriate treatment(s), and communicates with the clinical fellow and attending physician.
  8. Exemplifies Guest and Staff Relations standards in all activities.
  9. Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
