The Lombardi Infusion Unit is part of MedStar Georgetown's Comprehensive Cancer Center, established in 1971. LCCC was initially designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in 1974 and achieved NCI comprehensive status in 1990. The mission of LCCC is to improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer through innovative basic science, clinical research, patient care, community outreach, and the training of cancer specialists of the future.
The Lombardi Infusion Unit is composed of two divisions: a Clinical Trials Infusion Center and a Standard of Care Infusion Center. The patient population includes all hematologic diseases and cancers (leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, ITP, sickle cell anemia), autologous transplant patients, oncologic solid tumor, and a wide range of medical diagnoses. The Magnet® nurses in the Lombardi Infusion Unit provide expert care for their patients, while focusing on cura personalis, care for the whole person.
Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of Georgetown University Medical Center and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, seeks to prevent, treat and cure cancers by linking scientific discovery, expert and compassionate patient care, quality education, and partnership with the community, guided by the principle of cura personalis, care for the whole person.
Established in 1970, the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center is named for legendary football coach Vince Lombardi, who was treated for cancer at Georgetown University Hospital. What began as a small clinic treating cancer patients has grown into a state-of-the-art cancer center housing more than 240,000 square feet of clinic and research space. The director of the Cancer Center is Louis M. Weiner, MD.
