Local Nursing Students, Join MedStar Georgetown as a Student Nurse Technician in our Pediatric Outpatient Clinic at Tenleytown!

This position is a yearlong opportunity with participation in our upcoming 2020 Summer Nurse Technician Program, a paid externship designed to enhance your academic experience as an undergraduate Baccalaureate Nursing Student. In addition to working as a Nurse Tech in our clinic, Nurse Technicians will participate in educational sessions; a Washington, D.C., scavenger hunt; and shadow days. This program is an exceptional opportunity for you to strengthen your nursing skills, build your confidence, and gain exposure to different nursing specialties.

This position requires full-time hours throughout the summer and per diem hours through the school year. This position is located off the main hospital campus at our outpatient clinic in Tenleytown at 4200 Wisconsin Avenue NW.

General Summary of Position:
Works under the direction of the registered nurse and is responsible for the provision of direct nursing care in accordance with the established plan of care. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: Enrollment in an accredited baccalaureate degree school of nursing.
  • EXPERIENCE:
    • Student Nurse Technician I (SNT I): BSN student who has completed the sophomore year and has at least one semester of clinical experience. AD student who has completed one year of the respective program that has included at least one clinical rotation and/or one semester of clinical experience.
    • Student Nurse Technician (SNT II): BSN student who has completed the junior year and has had additional clinical experience.
    • Students who have not completed any tour of clinical experience may only perform non-patient care duties, such as clerical support.
  • LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: BLS required. Any additional tasks such as venipuncture or bedside blood glucose testing require that the SNT complete the same competency verification process undergone by a Clinical Nurse.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Ability to perform nursing technologies and provide direct nursing care to patients. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to set priorities and work under stress.

Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Utilizes the nursing process in carrying out direct patient care under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.
  2. Participates in patient/family teaching as directed.
  3. Communicates information in verbal and written reports that describe care that was planned and delivered to the patient and the patient's responses. Enters notes, as indicated, in the patient medical record. These notes must be co-signed by a registered nurse.
  4. Participates in the nursing unit's performance improvement activities.
  5. Maintains a safe and orderly patient/unit environment.
  6. Contributes to the development and implementation of unit goals and objectives.
  7. Exemplifies patient experience service standards and SPIRIT values, and actively participates in patient safety standards and tasks.
  8. Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
