General Summary of Position:
The incumbent in this position is responsible for providing competent professional nursing care using the nursing process. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.
About MedStar Georgetown's Surgical ICU – C4-3
MedStar Georgetown's 19-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) specializes in transplant (liver, kidney, pancreas, and small bowel); thoracic surgery; plastic-reconstructive surgeries; vascular surgery; abdominal surgery; and ear, nose, and throat surgery. The SICU is equipped to provide patients with state-of-the-art therapies at the bedside (continuous renal replacement), advanced hemodynamic monitoring, complex mechanical ventilation modes, and medication infusions. The synergy between our professional expertise and our patient care model allows for clinical outcomes and results that are among the best in the nation. Unit leadership supports participation in shared governance, research, and continuing education, as well as national specialty certification. The SICU is the proud recipient of the AACN Gold Level Beacon Award for excellence in critical care.
About MedStar Georgetown's Neuroscience ICU – C6-3
C6-3 is a 19-bed adult Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit. It is one of the few dedicated Neurosciences ICUs in Washington, D.C. Clinical nurses on C6-3 provide expert care for critically ill patients who have suffered stroke (hemorrhagic/ischemic), subarachnoid hemorrhage, subdural hematoma, and complex spine and brain surgeries. Other common neurological diagnoses include meningitis; Guillain-Barré syndrome; and viral, infectious, or autoimmune processes. In the past, C6-3 has been awarded both the Beacon Award for Nursing Excellence and the Nurse-Family Collaboration Award by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
About MedStar Georgetown's Medical ICU – C4-2
The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) nurses are clinical experts in the management of complicated medical problems and utilize many advanced therapies, such as continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), post-cardiac arrest hypothermia protocol, and hemodynamic emergencies.
The MICU is the home of MedStar Georgetown's rapid response nurse, known as the “Resource Nurse,” who provides critical assessment of decompensating patients throughout the hospital. Additionally, the MICU team functions as the CODE BLUE responders, managing emergent patient events with expertise and compassion. MICU nurses provide support and education for patients and family members throughout the entire life spectrum with a particular focus in end-of-life treatment.
The MICU has been recognized three times by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) with the Beacon Award for Nursing Excellence.
Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
EDUCATION/TRAINING: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor’s degree or higher in Nursing preferred.
EXPERIENCE: To meet unit criteria, at least two (2) years of recent acute care experience in the relevant patient care area.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Current D.C. license as a Registered Professional Nurse. Certification in Basic Life Support. Certification in specialty or related specialty preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: Ability to perform the nursing technologies. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to set priorities and work under stress.

Incorporates evidence-based practice and research into patient care delivery.
Performs other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
