Critical Care Fellowship for ICU, ED and PACU Nurses
If you are seeking the excitement and challenge of a critical care environment, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is offering a unique opportunity to train as a critical care nurse. This training fellowship includes:
Personalized orientation schedule, one-on-one preceptorship
Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (American Association of Critical Care Nurses)
American Heart Association certifications, as needed (BLS, ACLS, PALS)
Specialty content classes
All applicants must have at least two years of hospital-based inpatient nursing experience.
Internal applicants must have been in their current position for at least one year.
All applicants will be required to commit to one year of full-time employment, following completion of the unit-based orientation.

Surgical Intensive Care Unit – C4-3
MedStar Georgetown's 19-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) is staffed by highly dedicated and experienced critical care nurses and intensivists, complemented by skilled respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals trained to care for acutely ill surgical patients. Surgical specialties include transplant (liver, kidney, pancreas, and small bowel), thoracic surgery, plastic-reconstructive surgeries, vascular surgery, abdominal surgery, and ear, nose and throat surgery. The SICU is equipped to provide patients with state-of-the-art therapies at the bedside (continuous renal replacement), advanced hemodynamic monitoring, complex mechanical ventilation modes, and medication infusions. The synergy between our professional expertise and our patient care model allows for clinical outcomes and results that are among the best in the nation. Unit leadership supports participation in shared governance, research and continuing education, as well as national specialty certification. The SICU is the proud recipient of the 2015 AACN Gold Level Beacon Award for excellence in critical care.
Neuroscience ICU – C6-3
C6-3 is a 19-bed, adult Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit. It is one of the few dedicated Neurosciences ICUs in Washington, D.C. Clinical Nurses on C6-3 provide expert care for critically ill patients who have suffered stroke (hemorrhagic/ischemic), subarachnoid hemorrhage, subdural hematoma, and complex spine and brain surgeries. Other common neurological diagnoses include meningitis, Guillain-Barre syndrome and viral, infectious or autoimmune processes. In the past, C6-3 has been awarded both the Beacon Award for Nursing Excellence and the Nurse-Family Collaboration Award by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
Medical ICU – C4-2
C4-2 is a 19-bed, adult Medical Intensive Care Unit that specializes in the management of complicated medical problems and utilizes many advanced therapies, such as continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), post-cardiac arrest hypothermia protocol and hemodynamic emergencies.
The MICU is the home of MedStar Georgetown’s rapid response nurse, known as the “Resource Nurse,” who provides critical assessment of decompensating patients throughout the hospital. Additionally, the MICU team functions as the Code Blue responders, managing emergent patient events with expertise and compassion.

Main Post-Anesthesia Care Unit – PACU
The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is a 16-bay recovery room that provides immediate postoperative care to surgical patients in accordance with ASPAN standards. The PACU nurses care for both adult and pediatric patients who have undergone a broad range of surgical procedures with acuity ranging from ambulatory to critical care. Surgical specialties include ENT, urological, vascular, plastics, and thoracic with an emphasis on neurosurgery, orthopaedics, general surgery, and transplant. MedStar Georgetown will also hire into the Surgery Center and the Post-Procedural PACU.
MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s Emergency Department is a Level Two Trauma. The Emergency Department is staffed and equipped to care for 36,000 patients a year presenting for emergency evaluation and treatment. An experienced nurse will assess and triage their care as they enter the department and ensure that thorough, consistent, high-quality care is delivered to each patient. All of the nurses in the Emergency Department are certified in BLS, ACLS and PALS, but many also have their CEN, TNCC and ENPC certifications. Leadership supports and encourages nurses to enhance their educational expertise and professional development. MedStar Georgetown’s Emergency Department prides itself on its collaborative governance and decision making, which creates and implements new ideas centered on evidence-based practice. A team approach to staffing and assignments is a major initiative component that is embraced by the Emergency Department staff.
