EMU – Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
The EMU is a 6-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit for both adult and pediatric patients. The EMU is housed on the same unit as C5-3 with specialties that include General Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology patients. Cross-training is provided between both departments during orientation, since patient assignments often include a combination of C5-3 and EMU patients.
C5-3 is one of the most recently renovated units at MedStar Georgetown. All the rooms are private rooms that have been constructed to provide a more comfortable environment for our patients and their families, which include sleeper sofas and refrigerators. Clinical Nurses on the EMU provide expert care for our patients who are there to either rule out epilepsy or determine more advanced treatments for their epilepsy. Our goal is to help all our patients be seizure-free. Our patients are on 24-hour video EEG monitoring and may be candidates for Ictal-SPECT scans to determine the area of the brain that is generating their seizures. The Clinical Nurses collaborate with both the neurologists and EEG technicians to provide high-quality care and treatment.
One year of acute nursing experience required.
Experience with neurology patients is an asset.
Experience with adult patients is an asset.
BSN required. Experienced candidates enrolled in a BSN program may be considered.
