Acts as liaison throughout the Hospital with regard to availability of beds to ensure the prompt and accurate placement/assignment of patients into a bed/unit. Works with Nursing and other clinical departments to determine the best placement of a patient based on the patient's clinical needs and the availability of services. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

A. Acts as a liaison between physicians and other MGUH departments to facilitate the prompt and accurate assignment of patients into beds, resolves operational issues, and makes recommendations to improve access to GUH.

B. Works with nursing to determine availability of bed(s) on the units, balancing unit census, patient acuity and staff availability to meet patients' needs. Confers with Case Management, attending physicians or their designee, ancillary department representatives, Nursing, and other departments to strategize the most efficient use of patient beds.

C. Assigns beds based on patient's diagnosis, physician specialty and service, and bed and support availability via Pre-Admit Tracking System.

D. Updates Patient Access Associate when necessary. Maintains own knowledge of bed availability by routinely visiting units/floors.

E. Identifies, recommends and develops/implements quality assurance systems for improvement in access. Develops systems, procedures and/or policies with the various departments throughout GUH to facilitate communication and expeditious patient placement/flow.

F. Develops and presents in-services/educational programs for nursing units' administrative support staff, Environmental Service and other department personnel with the goal of fostering better communication and collaboration and improved patient flow.

G. Generates reports on bed assignment(s), turnover time, etc., for supervisor and management. Analyzes reports and gives recommendations to improve service/access. Reviews daily admission and clinical procedure reports and collaborates with other departments for efficient bed flow.

H. Informs Director, Patient Placement & NSO and other identified stakeholders of significant events, problems, any corrective actions taken, and/or suggested approach. Provides written documentation/reports as needed.

I. Maintains own knowledge of current trends and developments in the field of nursing, nursing management and bed management by reading literature and attending related seminars and conferences.

J. Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered as all-inclusive.

Required Education/Training:
  • Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing.
  • BSN strongly preferred.
  • Current D.C. licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse or a Registered Nurse.
  • BLS required.

Required Experience:
  • A minimum of 7 years of progressively more responsible job-related nursing experience exhibiting strong clinical skills and the ability to coordinate effectively.
  • Bed utilization experience is preferred.

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Problem Solving:
  • Job requires a relatively high level of problem-solving to find solutions to difficult human, technical, or clinical problems.

Independent Judgment:
  • Work is occasionally performed according to existing procedures and instructions, but often requires analysis of problems and development of solutions.
