Eight pathologists, 12 residents, one PA Student

  • Provides assistance in the Department of Pathology, undertaking an advanced role in surgical specimen processing and instructional teaching of all rotating students and residents.
  • Performs gross description and dissection of surgical specimens.
  • Maintains records of quality assurance and quality control in all aspects of Surgical Pathology.
  • Performs specialized procedures to include specimen radiographs, specimen photographs, frozen sections, maintaining and coordinating specimens and records for specialized procedures, and tissue triaging 
  • Instructional teaching of autopsies.

Required Education/Training:
  • Bachelor of Science degree and successful completion of an NAACLS-accredited pathologists' assistant program.
  • Must meet CLIA/DHR requirements.
  • Certification by American Association of Pathologists' Assistants (AAPA) or AAPA-eligible (sit for exam within 1 year of hire).

Required Experience:
  • One year of experience in an acute care facility.
  • Basic knowledge of human anatomy and macrosurgical techniques, and general laboratory skills.
  • Understanding of safety and infection control requirements of position.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain and prepare tissue for evaluation and to provide assistance to pathologists in a timely and quality manner.
  • Proficiency in preparing and maintaining records and in use of electronic communications tools and software.
  • Knowledge/ability to become knowledgeable in voice recognition software, Internet and multiple-interfaced systems, laboratory information system, Excel, and MS Word or equivalent applications.
  • High degree of technical competence and knowledge of all histological techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with peers, patients, physicians, and other customers of the medical center.
