Pediatric Intensive Care Unit – C5-2

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is a multidisciplinary, 14-bed unit that provides care for critically ill patients with ages ranging from neonates to 23 years. The unit is supported by the full spectrum of medical and surgical services. The PICU specializes in the care of complex transplant patients, such as pediatric liver, kidney, small bowel, and multivisceral organ transplants. As one of MedStar Georgetown's Centers of Excellence, the MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute draws pediatric patients from all around the world for our growing program, which recently introduced pediatric living donor transplants and domino transplants.

The PICU provides the highest level of care to critically ill medical and surgical patients, including those requiring high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, continuous veno-venous hemofiltration and inhaled nitric oxide. A team of three pediatric intensivists supervises the care of all patients in partnership with with residents, interns and attending physicians from other specialties. Experience:
  • Required: Two years of hospital-based nursing experience with Pediatric Intensive Care patients.

Education and Certification:
  • BSN preferred. Will consider candidates enrolled in a BSN program.

Schedule:
  • 12-hour shifts, 5 shifts required in a 6-week period, 3 of which must be off shifts (night shifts or weekend day/night shifts).
  • Self-scheduling, 6-week schedules.
  • Day shift positions available for a PRN Pediatrics Sedation Nurse (requiring five shifts in a six-week period).

Position Summary:
Responsible for providing competent professional nursing care using the nursing process. Provides direct patient care, utilizing the nursing process or assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care. Also participates in communication and decision-making activities of the unit, which include provision of care.

Required Education/Training:
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current D.C. license as a Registered Professional Nurse.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support.

Required Experience:
  • New employees must have minimum of two years of acute care experience in the area desired to work and a skill base broad enough to enable floating within a clinical area.
  • Must have certification and skills in appropriate areas of practice (e.g., PALS for PICU).
