Provides comprehensive support to the Department Chair, Department Administrator and the Medical Director of the Ophthalmic Training program in the areas of teaching, strategy, process, structure, curriculum planning, and financial oversight of the Ophthalmic Medical Personnel Training Program. Will perform complete ophthalmic history and preliminary examinations, subspecialty tests, in-office procedure assisting, contact lens work, and administrative tasks related to clinic operations. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.
- Training from an accredited Ophthalmic Technician/Technologist site or successful completion of Ophthalmic Assistant course.
- Certification required at the COA, COT or COMT level—COMT level strongly preferred.
- CPR certification preferred.
- Three years of ophthalmic experience required.
- Teaching/training, budgeting and program development experience required.
- One year of supervisory experience preferred.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet time-sensitive deadlines.
- Ability to set priorities and manage resources to accomplish departmental goals.
- Problem-solving skills, solid communication skills and ability to exercise sound, independent judgment are required, along with extensive knowledge of program development.
- Knowledge of professional ophthalmic theory, practice and medical care to give to and evaluate patients.
- Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care.
- Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional ophthalmic technicians/technologists to provide ongoing patient care.
- Skill in taking both medical and ocular histories to assess ocular conditions and interpret findings.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
- Ability to maintain quality control standards.
- Ability to remain calm and be effective in emergency situations.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
