General Summary of Position:
The Nurse Informaticist functions in a leadership role as a clinical systems expert in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. She/he performs duties in support of the essential functions described below. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: BS in Nursing or informatics-related field. MS, Nursing Informatics or related field preferred.
  • EXPERIENCE: Minimum of two years of bedside nursing care experience. Experience in a computer/information systems support-related role.
  • LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: RN license in D.C. ANCC Certification in Nursing Informatics preferred.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to organize, analyze and synthesize information. Working knowledge of computer databases, spreadsheets and word-processing software. Proficient with the use of Microsoft Office applications, Visio.

Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain the established standards of care and practice through clinical systems improvement activities and staff education. Ensure that the information systems utilized are consistent with professional standards of clinical practice.
  • Act as a resource for the facility related to nursing informatics and assist with patient care-related information system transformation rollouts.
  • Develop and coordinate communications related to information systems.
  • Utilize the knowledge and skills of clinical practice to determine clinical functions that are suitable for computer application, while continually monitoring and evaluating opportunities for technological enhancements.
  • Develop, evaluate and implement training pertaining to the staff's use of clinical systems.
  • Provide ongoing informatics support to staff, teams and committees throughout the facility.
  • Participate in the planning, development, implementation, upgrading, maintenance, and evaluation of clinical information systems.
  • Participate in efforts toward maintaining components of the clinical information systems, including revisions, testing system changes and integration of changes into the clinical environment.
  • Respond appropriately and in a timely manner to requests and concerns from users or others affected by the systems.
  • Develops, documents and leads processes for multidisciplinary end-user input regarding clinical systems and processes.
  • Participates in system analysis and research related to current and proposed clinical information systems.
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
