General Summary of Position:
Provides primary nursing care to patients while assisting the Physiatry physicians who are part of the MedStar Orthopaedic Institute team based out of Southern Maryland and Northern Virginia. Performs complete medical history and examinations. Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.  Reviews laboratory reports, radiographic reports and other diagnostic reports and consultant reports.  Provides telephone coverage for clinical problems called in by patients, nurses, caregivers and others. Completes patient forms related to the patient’s care and assists with appeal authorization denials for medication and surgery. These functions are performed in accordance with MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.
 
Qualifications:
  • EDUCATION AND OR TRAINING REQUIRED: BSN from an accredited School of Nursing. Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program
  • LICENSURE AND OR CERTIFICATION: State license in MD and VA as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner. BLS certification. 
  • EXPERIENCE: 3 years of nursing experience preferred. Candidates with previous experience in anesthesia, pain management, internal medicine, neurology, and/or orthopedics preferred but not required. 
  • SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice and medical care to give and evaluate patients. Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care.  Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care. Skill in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public. Ability to maintain and control standards. Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency situations. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.   

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Triages patient telephone inquiries and provides consultation, as needed and ensures appropriate treatment or referral.
  • Provides patient care in the clinical setting to include: assessment, analysis, and treatment of acute and chronic problems.
  • Performs physical examinations pertinent to the patient’s medical history and complaint and/or study participation. 
  • Orders and evaluates appropriate diagnostic studies and procedures. 
  • Works with surgical scheduling specialist coordinating and scheduling surgical cases. 
  • Communicates with insurance and patients to obtain required precertification to ensure payment for services provided. 
  • Informs patients of pre-operative requirements and provide necessary orders and instructions to patient, departments and primary care providers following insurance requirements. 
  • Interprets and synthesizes data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan and procedures. 
  • Records and documents assessment data, interventions, results and patient outcomes per established clinical protocols. 
  • Assists in maintaining reports and correspondence in patients’ charts.  Facilitates attorney requests according to established guidelines. 
  • Assists in preparing charts for clinic hours. 
  • Works in coordination with, assists and covers in the absence of medical secretary. 
  • Instructs patients and family regarding medications and treatment/surgical instructions. 
  • Provides patient education and serves as resource to other clinical team members regarding particular expertise. 
  • Assists patients in accessing services within the Medical Center and community. 
  • Collaborates with physician in evaluating and managing the acute and long-term medical/surgical needs of patients.
