Radiation Medicine - Faculty Practice

Provides daily nursing and medical management and care of patients by assisting in communications with patients, triaging patients and patient issues, performing symptom management, and teaching patient regarding their disease process and treatment, in collaboration with the Chairman of the Department of Radiation Medicine or other designated physicians. Assists in diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and day-to-day evaluation, including diagnosis and evaluation of laboratory data, under direction of a physician. Implements a plan of care for patients. Provides for the psychosocial management of patients and families, and coordinates care management with nursing staff. Serves as informational resource to patients, families and other physicians and makes appropriate referrals. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

Required Education/Training:
  • BSN from an accredited school of nursing; MSN preferred.
  • Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Licensed in D.C. as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner.
  • Credentialed as a member of the MGUH professional staff.
  • CPR certification.

Required Experience:
  • Three to five years of nursing experience, inclusive of at least one year of directly related experience in radiation medicine/oncology preferred.

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice and medical care to give evaluations to patients.
  • Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care.
  • Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care.
  • Skill in taking medical histories to assess medical conditions and interpreting findings.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
