General Summary of Position:
The Nurse Practitioner for the Lung Cancer Screening Program will be responsible for functioning as the gatekeeper for patients. They will coordinate each patient's screening and subsequent follow-up and be directly involved in patient care. He/she must develop and implement a patient care plan and must be able to work with a multidisciplinary team. The team includes, but is not limited to, Pulmonary, Radiology, Radiation Oncology, and Surgery. They must be able to communicate with all members of the healthcare team on behalf of the patient. They must refer the patients to the appropriate specialist for diagnosis and treatment by using the clinical protocols. They must be able to communicate with the office of the physician who is referring as required by the patient and the physician. They must be able to provide emotional support and counseling based on the clinical situation. They must improve the clinical experiences for the referred patients or physicians by involving themselves directly with the development and the enhancement processes. They must develop and maintain the hospital protocols by working with the designated physicians from various clinical services. They must identify and implement improvement processes that require advanced practice expertise and the ability to design, implement and direct healthcare plans. They must be able to work with the marketing and outreach departments and educate physicians and facilities on the services offered. Additionally, this position must work directly with the faculty in Medical Oncology to provide comprehensive clinical care to patients who are seeking screening examinations or related testing and/or require treatment for Lung Cancer. This clinical care must include, but not be limited to, performing physical and psychological assessments, diagnosis and treatment of episodic illnesses in collaboration with physicians; performing diagnostic procedures; administering chemotherapy, blood products and supportive therapies; and coordinating and communicating all aspects of care with patients/family and the healthcare team. These functions are performed in accordance with the philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
  • EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING REQUIRED: Nurse Practitioner with a Master’s degree in Nursing or Science.
  • LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATION: Current D.C. license as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 3 years experience in hematology/oncology. Experience in a university teaching hospital preferred.
  • SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with patients/families, as well as staff and physicians. Demonstrates strong leadership skills and the ability to function independently.
  • Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Functions as a gatekeeper for patients entering the system through the Lung Cancer Screening Program.
  • Coordinates screening for all patients.  
  • Provides ongoing education resources to patients and their families. Provides emotional support and counseling related to the clinical situation.
  • Works to coordinate care with the faculty and clinical services in Pulmonary, Radiology, Radiation Oncology, and Surgery for patients with a positive result.
  • Coordinates and communicates all aspects of patient care to patient, family and healthcare team, i.e., art therapy, social work, inpatient unit, school community, referring physicians.
  • Develops protocols for treatment in conjunction with multidisciplinary faculty in the development of care plans.
  • Coordinates multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Board in the review of all patient cases.
  • Works with marketing and outreach departments to educate referring physicians and facilities on services.
  • Assesses the physical and psychosocial status of clients by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies.
  • Recognizes deviations from normal in the physical assessment. Works in collaboration with a physician in formulating treatment plans for health problems and follow-up.
  • Writes prescriptions for medication, blood products based upon laboratory results, routine diagnostic and follow-up studies, therapeutic measures, and post-discharge care in accordance with written practice protocols.
  • Determines eligibility of patients for entry into clinical trials based on findings.
  • Requests written consultation from physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate and quality patient care.
  • Interprets and evaluates findings of studies/tests.
  • Initiates appropriate actions to facilitate the implementation of therapeutic plans that are consistent with the continuing healthcare needs of the client.
