Functions as a Nurse Practitioner to provide comprehensive care to a designated patient population (Bone Marrow Transplant Service patients) This position manages a group of clinically complex or resource-intensive patients. Management includes assessing, diagnosing, planning, and prescribing pharmacological (in a collaborative practice) and non-pharmaceutical treatment for health problems according to established protocols, standards of care, health promotion, and preventive care within a specialized area of practice. Performs physical and psychological assessments, diagnosis and treatment of episodic illnesses in collaboration with physicians; performs diagnostic procedures; oversees the administration of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood products, and supportive therapies; and coordinates and communicates all aspects of care with patients/family and the healthcare team. Performs the role of advanced practice nurse through clinical practice, education, research, and consultation with multidisciplinary groups, utilizing a holistic approach to wellness. These functions are performed in accordance with MedStar Georgetown's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

Required Education/Training:
  • Master's degree in Nursing or Science.
  • Graduate of an NLN/AACN-accredited program in nursing.
  • Current D.C. license as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Maintains clinical competencies through participating in continuing educational programs (contact hours per years) and clinical practice, as mandated by Board of Nursing and national certification body.

Required Experience:
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Hematology/Oncology and/or Blood and Marrow Transplant, with a minimum of 2 years of experience in an acute care facility.
  • Experience in relevant patient care setting or as regulations dictate.
  • Experience in a university teaching hospital preferred.

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with patients/families, as well as staff and physicians.
  • Excellent clinical knowledge base in Oncology.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership skills and the ability to function independently.
