General Summary of Position:
Functions as a Nurse Practitioner to provide comprehensive care to a designated patient population. Performs physical and psychological assessments and diagnosis and treatment of episodic illnesses in collaboration with physicians. Performs diagnostic procedures; administers chemotherapy, blood products and supportive therapies; and coordinates and communicates all aspects of care with patients/family and the healthcare team. Functions in coordination with the director of the program. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.
 
Qualifications:

  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: Nurse Practitioner with a Master's degree in Nursing or Science.
  • EXPERIENCE: Two years of experience in an acute care facility, preferably but not exclusively, in pediatric hematology/oncology and/or transplant.
  • LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Current D.C. license as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner. Credentialed as a member of the MGUH professional staff.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with patients/families, as well as staff and physicians. Excellent clinical knowledge base of BMT. Demonstrates strong leadership skills and the ability to function independently.
Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs physical and psychological assessment. Diagnoses and treats episodic illnesses for a designated patient population.
  • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in accordance with standards to include, but not limited to, bone marrow biopsy/aspirates, bone marrow harvests, lumbar punctures, and administration of conscious sedation, phlebotomy and access of Ommaya reservoirs.
  • Provides ongoing education resource to patients and their families.
  • Administers chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood products, and supportive therapy, such as hydration, antibiotics, electrolyte replacement, and pain medications, in accordance with hospital policy. Monitors patients during apheresis.
  • Coordinates and communicates all aspects of patient care to patient, family and healthcare team, i.e., Art Therapy, social work, inpatient unit, school community, referring physicians.
  • Responsible for personal and professional growth and development.
  • Participates in the identification of CQI opportunities; collaborates in a research-based approach to CQI endeavors.
  • Plans, directs, implements, monitors, and evaluates a weekday nursing care delivery system for a clinical area to ensure that the nursing care performed is according to standard.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with nursing staff, support staff, physicians, patients, families, and other departments in order to provide patient and unit services.
  • Promotes the professional growth and development of staff by planning for, participating in and evaluating educational opportunities.
  • Determines, approves and facilitates the degree and type of participation by self and nursing department staff on the unit in research and development activities.
  • Recommends, approves, initiates, and evaluates marketing activities for nursing when applicable.
  • Appraises, forecasts and determines a desired set of future conditions and strategies required to achieve the goals and objectives of the organization within the incumbent’s area of expertise.
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
