General Summary of Position:
Works in collaboration with a multidisciplinary healthcare team based in the department of Neurosurgery, managing the neuroscience patient population in the outpatient setting at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center (MMMC) and other locations upon mutual agreement. Primary responsibility involves the coordination and triage of care for patients referred for neurosurgical evaluation.
EDUCATION/TRAINING: BSN and MSN from an accredited school of nursing. Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program.
EXPERIENCE: Three years of nursing experience in the area of neurosciences, inclusive of at least one year of directly related experience in neurosurgery is preferred.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: State licensure in Maryland as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner certification with prescriptive privileges. BLS certification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice and medical care to give to and evaluate patients. Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care. Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care. Skill in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public. Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to maintain calm and be effective in emergency situations. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a broad spectrum of professionals, including attending physicians, residents, medical students, trainees, support staff, and hospital management.
Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Collaborates with interdisciplinary healthcare team in making diagnoses of acute and complex chronic conditions.
Interfaces directly with referring physician in the assessment of completeness and adequacy of outside imaging and other diagnostic testing, and suggests additional studies as needed to complement further evaluation and treatment by the attending neurosurgeon.
May perform and document in the medical record a complete history and physical examination for acute and complex chronically ill patients with neurological/neurosurgical diseases. Assesses for risks associated with the care of the acute and complex chronically ill patient, including medication side effects, immobility, impaired nutrition, fluid and electrolyte imbalance, immunocompetence, invasive interventions, and diagnostic procedures.
Orders and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques relevant to supporting diagnostic information and diagnostic procedures where indicated. Coordinates daily clinic schedule with the attending physician team, presents patient report, collaborates in plan of care, and follows assigned patient population.
Manages diagnostic tests through ordering, interpretation, performance, and supervision; formulates differential diagnoses by priority; diagnoses complications and orders appropriate interventions; identifies expected outcomes from diagnosis; and formulates and documents a plan of care to address complex acute and chronic healthcare needs.
Utilizes evidence-based practice guidelines or protocols in an individualized, dynamic plan of care that can be applied across the continuum.
Collaborates with the clinical research team to recommend potential studies in which the patient(s) may be eligible to participate.
Prescribes diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions of a pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic and surgical nature needed to achieve expected outcomes.
Educates patients regarding health promotion/illness prevention; instructs patient/family regarding medications and treatments; facilitates communication with patient, family and staff to promote continuity of care across the outpatient continuum of care; and recommends appropriate community resources to meet patient/family needs.
Triages patient telephone inquiries and provides consultation, as needed.
Demonstrates professional practice behaviors, including preceptor/mentoring and education and instruction of students, nursing staff, nurses, and graduate and novice nurse practitioners where appropriate.
Participates in educational opportunities, faculty and unit meetings, and M&M presentations. Maintains CEUs and membership in a professional organization.
Performs other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
