General Summary of Position:
The Nurse Practitioner for Behavioral and Developmental Pediatrics will provide age- and specialty-appropriate diagnoses, treatment, consultation, and follow-up under the supervision of one or more physicians in the Division of Behavioral and Developmental Pediatrics. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

Qualifications:
  • EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING REQUIRED: Nurse Practitioner.
  • LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATION: Current D.C. license as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • EXPERIENCE: Advanced training in pediatrics and additional training in, or equivalent experience working with, developmental and behavioral disorders in children.
  • SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with patients/families, as well as staff and physicians and other professionals. Demonstrates strong leadership skills and the ability to function independently.

Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Effectively identifies, evaluates, treats, and follows up with patients in the division's practice in collaboration with supervising faculty.
  • Appropriately manages specific developmental and behavioral disorders including, but not limited to, ADHD, autism, behavior disorders, learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and medically complex children with developmental delays in collaboration with supervising faculty.
  • Educates patients and/or families about normal growth and development; behavior management; and the risks, benefits and alternatives to medication for children with behavioral disorders.
  • Effectively advocates for children with disabilities who are receiving special education services.
  • Maintains legible, accurate and confidential medical records. Documents all medical evaluations, diagnoses, procedures, treatment, outcomes, education, referrals, and consultations consistent with National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), and state regulatory standards.
  • Facilitates evaluation of records by physician(s), peers and quality and standards according to protocols. Receives and implements constructive directives.
  • Analyzes new knowledge gained from conferences, workshops, professional literature, or "hands-on training" and assimilates this knowledge into clinical practice.
  • Prescribes or recommends drugs or other forms of treatment, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and related therapeutic procedures.
  • Appropriately refers patients to physicians and other licensed professionals for consultation or to specialized health resources for treatment.
  • Responds appropriately to calls from patients, referring providers, school personnel, and other professionals involved in the care and management of the division's patients.
  • Facilitates and participates in scheduled educational activities of the division.
  • Adheres to all requirements for maintenance of hospital credentialing, licensure, professional liability insurance, and prescribing privileges within the jurisdictions of practice.
  • Exemplifies Guest and Staff Relations at all times.
