General Summary of Position:
Provides oversight to the division's Nurse Practitioners, including directing, organizing, planning, and supervising activities of personnel. In conjunction with Division Administrator and Patient Services Manager, manages and facilitates the daily operations of the GI clinic. Provides daily nursing and medical management and care of patients with gastrointestinal disorders in collaboration with Chief of Endoscopy or other designated physicians. Assists in diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and day-to-day evaluation, including diagnosis and evaluation of laboratory data, under direction of a physician. Implements a plan of care for patients. Provides for the psychosocial management of patients and families, and coordinates care management with nursing staff. Serves as informational resource to patients, families and other physicians and makes appropriate referrals. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

Qualifications:
  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: BSN from an accredited school of nursing. MSN preferred. Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program.
  • EXPERIENCE: Three to five years of nursing experience, inclusive of at least one year of directly related experience in gastroenterology preferred.
  • LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Licensed in D.C. as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner. Credentialed as a member of the MGUH professional staff. CPR certification.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice and medical care to give evaluations to patients. Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care. Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care. Skill in taking medical histories to assess medical conditions and interprets findings. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public. Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to remain calm and be effective in emergency situations. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Elicits records and interprets a complete health history to include all past medical, family and psychosocial aspects. Performs complete physical examination and distinguishes between normal and abnormal findings.
  • Orders, interprets and evaluates diagnostic tests and procedures to identify and assess patient's clinical problems and health status.
  • Orders and adjusts medications per written protocol or in consultation with a physician.
  • Reviews, develops and implements a plan to improve patient flow through the Gastroenterology outpatient clinic to facilitate clinical efficiency, patient satisfaction and division productivity. Meets regularly with department heads of both clinical and ancillary departments to ensure efficient and effective daily operations.
  • In conjunction with the Division Administrator, works with the Human Resources Department to hire clinical staff to ensure that the division is staffed at appropriate levels. Maintains personnel files for staff to ensure compliance with certification and employee health requirements, in addition to annual competencies for the clinical staff. In conjunction with physicians, performs Nurse Practitioner annual reviews, performs office medical assistant annual reviews, and presents them to the Division Administrator.
  • Formulates, implements and provides for the follow-up of a plan of care for patients, based on history, physical examination, appropriate laboratory evaluation and diagnostic procedures trends, and developments in nursing practice.
  • Collaborates with attending physicians, social workers, nursing staff, and other members of the healthcare team, community agencies, home care, local providers, and schools.
  • Represents the Gastroenterology nursing and ancillary staff in the appropriate hospital committees and meetings. Interfaces with MedStar hospital administration in order to represent and keep the Gastroenterology division staff informed of hospital issues, voice concerns and develop an awareness of the activities of the Gastroenterology division.
  • Ensures that the Gastroenterology clinic is in compliance with The Joint Commission and DCRA standards and maintains those standards on a daily basis. Monitors and ensures that all professional, regulatory and organizational standards are met.
  • Works in conjunction with the nursing staff to meet the needs of patients identified in the nursing care plan, including meeting the emotional needs of the patient and family, providing patient family education, planning for home care, and coordinating any necessary aspect of patient management.
  • Acts as an educational resource for the nursing staff in regard to the care of patients.
  • Maintains clinical competency in medical and nursing care of patients and stays informed of current trends and developments in nursing practice.
  • Provides continuity of care through all stages of illness (diagnosis, treatment, relapse, and terminal care), as well as continued health maintenance and observation for potential late effects of therapy.
  • Plans and participates in the orientation of new Nurse Practitioners, nursing staff, fellows, residents, medical students, and nursing students.
  • Plans and participates in research/investigation related to the nursing and/or medical needs of patients and families.
  • Plans or participates in the development of educational material for patients, families and professionals.
  • Serves as information resource to patients and their families to provide instruction regarding diagnosis, treatment, methods, and objectives.
  • Triages outpatient telephone assessments, interprets and records data, and consults or reports information to medical provider to determine plan of care and appropriate follow-up.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
