General Summary of Position:
Evaluates and manages care of patients undergoing cardiovascular procedures, including history taking and physical examination, ordering and interpreting diagnostic testing, and clinical management of post-procedures. Coordinates discharge planning. Conducts non-invasive cardiac diagnostic testing in collaboration with attending cardiologists. Assists with various clinical protocols and projects. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: Graduate of a nurse practitioner program from an accredited school of nursing. MS degree required.
  • EXPERIENCE: Minimum of two years of critical care nursing experience; cardiology/cardiovascular surgery experience preferred.
  • LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Current D.C. licensure as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner. Current certification in Acute Care or Adult Nurse Practitioner. Credentialed as a member of the MGUH professional staff.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Ability to deal effectively with patients, attending physicians, referring physicians and staff. Excellent organizational and communication skills. Computer skills, including knowledge of Windows, MS Word, Excel, Access and Internet, helpful.
Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs pre-procedure and preoperative evaluation, including taking medical history and performing physical examination, ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic testing, obtaining informed consent for procedures, and providing patient education.
  • Provides comprehensive post-procedural and postoperative care utilizing protocols, and assists physicians/house staff in ongoing patient management as needed.
  • Provides discharge planning and patient education in collaboration with appropriate physicians and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Maintains open communication with referring physicians by providing patient updates and recommendations for discharge planning.
  • Assists with various research protocols and patient recruitment for studies approved to be conducted at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
  • Attends research protocol training meetings and Scientific Sessions as appropriate.
  • Provides patient and family education about cardiovascular/cardiology services, procedures performed and disease management.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities by developing evidence-based protocols and guidelines in collaboration with other members of the team, attending monthly Morbidity and Mortality Conference, and participating in other departmental meetings and conferences regularly.
  • Conducts treadmill/ECG portion of standard, nuclear and echocardiographic stress tests.
  • Conducts pharmacologic stress tests (e.g., adenosine, regadenoson, dobutamine).
  • Provides preliminary interpretation of ECG portion of aforementioned stress tests.
  • Notifies appropriate physician(s) of abnormal test findings.
  • Participates in interpretation of cardiac nuclear imaging studies as part of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Participates on the inpatient Cardiology Consultation Service, performing patient evaluations and assisting with care coordination with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
