General Summary of Position:
The individual in this position provides comprehensive clinical management of patients in the Stroke Program in collaboration with the attending physicians and stroke team within established program guidelines to promote growth and excellent patient outcomes. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s (MGUH) philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.
About the Stroke Program:
MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (MGUH) seeks a Nurse Practitioner with knowledge in vascular neurology to join the Comprehensive Stroke Center at Washington Hospital Center, based in a multidisciplinary clinical, academic, and research environment. The individual selected will participate in the clinical activities of our stroke program—a teaching site for the Georgetown Neurology Residency Program and the NIH ACGME-certified vascular neurology fellowship program, as well as a clinical research site for the NIH intramural stroke program and the NIH StrokeNet Clinical Trials Network.
Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING REQUIRED: BSN and MSN from an accredited school of nursing. Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program.
LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATION: State licensure in D.C. as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner certification with prescriptive privileges. BLS certification. State licensures in MD and VA as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner with prescriptive privileges required within first 30 days, as appropriate to scope of regional role within MedStar Health.
EXPERIENCE: Three years of medical nursing experience, inclusive of at least one year of directly related experience in neurology.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice and medical care to give to and evaluate patients. Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care. Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care. Skill in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public. Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to maintain calm and be effective in emergency situations. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a broad spectrum of professionals, including attending physicians, residents, medical students, trainees, support staff, and hospital management.

Serve as a first responder of acute stroke team for stroke codes, including when stroke fellows and/or attending physicians may be off-site (this requires working within the 3T MRI suite in close proximity to the magnet).
Participate in the evaluation and management of patients receiving inpatient and outpatient services.
Obtain and complete inpatient stroke consultations with recommendations and follow-up for the stroke program.
Serve as a point of continuity and orientation to specifics of MWHC stroke policies and practices during monthly and yearly transition of clinical stroke house staff.
Participate in stroke telemedicine consultations with spoke hospitals.
Serve as an Associate Investigator in research protocols and facilitate stroke research activities at MWHC, including acute neuroimaging; be well-versed in the protocols with regards to patient eligibility and trial enrollment and management procedures; actively recruit, enroll and manage patients in protocols; conduct outpatient follow-up of patients enrolled in the protocols; perform necessary data collection and documentation required of the protocols; participate in continuing staff education regarding specific requirements of individual protocols; and accompany subjects, for whom hospital policy requires such, to and from CT/MRI for research scans in order to ensure appropriate patient monitoring and acquisition of research scans.
Conduct stroke patient education of secondary stroke prevention in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
Support clinical rotation of NP students from accredited programs with the Stroke Center.
Participate in and provide community stroke education sessions in the D.C. metro area in settings including health fairs and invited community organizations.
Perform other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
