General Summary of Position:
Responsible for the coordination of patient care across the continuum of oncologic care for breast patients. Educates/provides information, supports patients, and facilitates treatment plans. Functions as a patient advocate, guides patients and families throughout cancer care and survivorship experience. These functions are performed in accordance all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.
- EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in nursing required. Master’s of Science in Nursing preferred.
- LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATION: Licensure as a RN in the District of Columbia. Oncology nurse certification preferred.
- EXPERIENCE:4-5 years of clinical nursing experience in oncology required. Experience with surgical oncology, inpatient/outpatient/community oncology services preferred. Must have clinical maturity and experience, excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team of health care providers. Effective oral and written communication skills required.
- SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Position requires a high level of advocacy and problem-solving ability. Ability to multitask and organize advocacy and support for a large and varied group of cancer patients and their families. Knowledge of community resources helpful.
- Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.
- Obtains baseline assessment of patients used for the development of an individualized plan of care.
- Works with the interdisciplinary team throughout the continuum of oncology care to facilitate diagnostic testing and treatment.
- Provides patient and family education specific to disease process and treatment. Functions as a resource in the provision of community care and outreach.
- Functions as a liaison between patients, families, health care team and community resources. Advocates identifying and eliminating barriers to care.
- Handles referral calls to ensure streamlined access to care. Ensures patient referral process for specialty services is coordinated, anticipating patient and family needs throughout the process. Specialty services include but are not limited to surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, inpatient services, rehabilitation services, home health, psychosocial and spiritual care.
- Monitors patient outcomes and participates in quality improvement activities. Contributes to the development of clinical guidelines, policies and procedures related to role.
- Maintains knowledge of clinical trials and facilitates patient participation in research.
