General Summary of Position:
Provides professional nursing care for clinic patients following established standards and practices. Monitors quality and safety issues. Functions in a nursing work and clinical skills mentoring capacity to medical assistant staff. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

Minimum Qualifications
  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN preferred.
  • EXPERIENCE: A minimum of two years of professional nursing experience. Must have strong organizational skills. Office management/administrative experience is highly desired.
  • LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Registered Nurse license in the District of Columbia. CPR certification.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care. Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs general nursing care for patients. Administers prescribed medications, vaccines, treatments, and procedures in accordance with nursing standards. Observes, records and reports patient's condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to physicians. Dispenses medication as directed. Ensures that nursing documentation is complete, accurate and legible. Greets patients and prepares them for physician examination. Screens patients for appropriate information. Instructs and teaches patients in the collection of samples and tests. Prepares equipment and aids physician during treatment, examination and testing of patients. 
  • Develops weekly schedules and makes daily assignments. Serves as the point of contact for all clinic personnel changing shifts or calling in regarding attendance matters. 
  • Participates with the Administrator I in quality and process improvement initiatives, and assists in maintaining fiscal objectives. Performs mock The Joint Commission surveys to ensure regulatory compliance. 
  • Performs patient telephone triage, assesses needs and coordinates needs with nursing and medical staff. Also provides coverage to nurses within the unit. 
  • Educates/counsels patient and family about diagnostic procedures, medication adherence, nutrition, and maintenance of health and wellness. Maintains and reviews patient records, charts and other pertinent information. Posts test and examination results. Educates patients by providing information concerning HIV/AIDS-related medications, side effects and the disease process.  
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures. Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested. In conjunction with the Nurse Manager, develops and supports continuing education opportunities for clinic staff. Maintains own clinical expertise by attending in-service programs. 
  • Works with Nurse Manager to ensure staff are trained and adhere to office policies and procedures, including adherence to minimum service requirement standards. 
  • Adapts to and excels in the use of all electronic programs utilized in the division to include, but not limited to, Centricity, Azyxxi and McKesson. Documents all vital signs, treatments and medication immunization administration promptly. 
  • Assesses patients for treatment readiness to initiate HAART. 
  • Monitors patient progress and referrals through regularly scheduled face-to-face appointments, telephone calls and hospital visits. Coaches patients receiving antiretroviral therapy towards successful treatment outcomes. 
  • Screens for basic entitlement eligibility (ADAP, MADAP, MHIP, PAP) and completes applications or referrals as appropriate. 
  • Collaborates and coordinates with the HIV/AIDS case manager in identifying and addressing psychosocial needs impacting patient adherence. 
  • Manages, monitors and exercises all functions related to the division's prescription refill line. 
  • Collects clinical data relevant to initiate and complete prior authorization for oral medication. 
  • Participates in weekly case conferences and works within a multidisciplinary team on assessment and treatment planning. 
  • Promotes continuity of care by facilitating access to primary care providers and community linkages. Liaises with other AIDS service organizations and network to create cooperative relationships. 
  • Complies with Department of Health requirements in reporting new cases of HIV. 
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
