MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is opening a new Spine Surgery & Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. We are currently accepting applications for new graduate nurses to start November 11, 2019 in our Vizient/American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Nurse Residency Program™.

Our year-long New Graduate Nurse Residency program provides the mentoring and support you need to transition from student to professional nurse. You'll attend monthly seminars and learning activities, formulate an individual professional development plan, and complete an evidence-based practice project related to a unit specialty of your choice.

The New Graduate Nurse Residency, beginning November 11, 2019, is intended for Summer/Fall 2019 graduates of accredited BSN programs. Spring 2019 BSN graduates will also be considered. This selective program is open only to candidates with a GPA of 3.2 or higher, so please list your GPA in your resume or cover letter.

General Summary of Position:
A nurse is responsible for providing competent professional nursing care using the nursing process. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.
About MedStar Georgetown's Newly Renovated Unit – C5-3 Spine Surgery/Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU)
C5-3 is a newly renovated adult surgical unit, scheduled to open in early 2020. This 14-bed, adult unit will be part of MedStar Georgetown's nationally renowned Neurosciences Center of Excellence.
C5-3 nurses will provide postoperative care for adult neurosurgical and orthopaedics patients with spine disorders. Additionally, clinical nurses will provide expert care for patients who are admitted to either rule out epilepsy or determine more advanced treatments for their epilepsy. EMU patients will be on 24-hour video EEG monitoring and may be candidates for Ictal SPECT scans to determine the area of the brain that is generating their seizures. Our goal is to help all of our patients be seizure-free.
C5-3 nurses will work collaboratively with members of the healthcare team to provide high-quality, patient-centered specialty care. The healthcare team includes Neurosurgeons, Neurologists, EEG Technicians, and Advanced Practice Nurses to manage the healthcare needs of this complex patient population.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING REQUIRED: Graduation from an accredited baccalaureate school of nursing.
LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATION: 1) Must be waiting for results of NCLEX exam (first sitting) already taken; 2) must have set an NCLEX exam date (first sitting) within two months of MGUH hire/start date; OR 3) must have successfully completed the NCLEX and is awaiting D.C. nursing licensure. No Graduate Nurse Technician can be in this classification if they have already failed boards or if they do not set an NCLEX exam date within two months after hire/start. BLS required.
EXPERIENCE: Experience as a Nursing Assistant or Nurse Tech desired. Satisfactory references from the school of nursing attended.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Ability to perform the nursing technologies. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to set priorities and work under stress.
