General Summary of Position:
Provides specialized Nurse Practitioner services for patients with headache, acting as an assistant to physicians in the Department of Neurology. Provides Nurse Practitioner services for headache patients. Completes medical history and physical examinations. Assists in the diagnostic evaluation of patients being seen for headache. Administers medications and orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures. Writes orders in charts and gives verbal telephone orders to qualified professional nurses. Reviews laboratory reports, radiographic reports, other diagnostic reports, and consultation reports. Sees patients in follow-up visits to assess response to treatment. Assists in the instruction and education of students, residents and fellows in the department of Neurology. Assists in the administrative matters of headache. Provides telephone coverage for clinical problems for patients with headache called in by patients, nurses, caregivers, and others. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.
EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING REQUIRED: BSN from an accredited school of nursing. Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program.
LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATION: State license in D.C. as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner. CPR certification. Certification in ACLS.
EXPERIENCE: Three years of nursing experience, inclusive of at least one year of directly related experience in neurology/headache subspecialty.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice and medical care to give to and evaluate patients. Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care. Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care. Skill in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public. Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency situations. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Obtains complete medical history and physical data on patients in the headache clinic.
Performs physical examinations for patients with headache and discusses any abnormalities with supervising attending.
Assesses acute medical problems for patients with headache and discusses with supervising attending.
Orders and evaluates appropriate diagnostic studies and procedures after discussion with supervising attending.
Interprets and synthesizes data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plans and procedures. Discusses with supervising attending.
Records and documents assessment data, interventions, results, and patients' outcomes per established clinical protocols.
Administers medications and injections, as directed by supervising attending.
Instructs patients and family regarding medications and treatment instructions. Provides patient education and services as resource to other clinical team members regarding particular expertise in headache.
Educates students, residents and fellows rotating in headache clinic in the proper diagnosis and treatment of headache. Participates in the didactic instruction of students, residents, fellows, and nurses as requested.
Triages patient telephone inquiries and provides consultation with appropriate documentation in medical charts as needed and as directed by supervising attending.
Completes forms and writes letters for patients as needed and directed by supervising attending.
Collaborates with physician in evaluating and managing the acute and long-term medical needs of patients.
Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
