MedStar Georgetown is currently seeking experienced nurses for our Critical Care Fellowship in the Emergency Department.

Start Date: Monday, February 4, 2019
  • Personalized 4-month orientation schedule, one-on-one preceptorship
  • Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (American Association of Critical Care Nurses)
  • American Heart Association certifications, as needed (BLS, ACLS, PALS)
  • Specialty content classes

In order to qualify for a position in the fellowship, you must have at least two years of hospital-based nursing experience. In addition, internal applicants must have worked in their current department for at least one year, as of February 4, 2019.
 
All candidates hired for the training course will be required to commit to a minimum of one year of full-time employment in the Emergency Department, following completion of the unit-based orientation.
 
General Summary of Position:
A nurse is responsible for providing competent professional nursing care using the nursing process. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

About MedStar Georgetown’s Emergency Department
MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s Emergency Department is a Level Two Trauma. The Emergency Department is staffed and equipped to care for 36,000 patients a year presenting for emergency evaluation and treatment. An experienced nurse will assess and triage their care as they enter the department and ensure that thorough, consistent and high-quality care is delivered to each patient. All of the nurses in the Emergency Department are certified in BLS, ACLS and PALS, but many also have their CEN, TNCC and ENPC certifications.

Leadership supports and encourages nurses to enhance their educational expertise and professional development. MedStar Georgetown’s Emergency Department prides itself on its collaborative governance and decision making, which creates and implements new ideas centered on evidence-based practice. A team approach to staffing and assignments is a major initiative component that is embraced by the Emergency Department staff.
 
Qualifications:
  • EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING REQUIRED: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor’s degree or higher in Nursing preferred.
  • LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATION: Current D.C. license as a Registered Professional Nurse upon hire. Certification in Basic Life Support. Certification in specialty or related specialty preferred.
  • EXPERIENCE: To meet unit criteria, at least two (2) years of recent acute care experience in the relevant patient care area preferred.
  • SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Ability to perform the nursing technologies. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to set priorities and work under stress.

    • Provides relationship-based care that promotes continuous, consistent, efficient, and accountable delivery of nursing care using the nursing process. 
    • Demonstrates professional practice utilizing the framework of the professional practice model and is grounded in a culture of safety and quality.
  • COMMUNICATION & COLLABORATION
    • Communicates and collaborates with interprofessional groups to ensure coordination, continuity and safe care.   
    • Communicates verbal information and documents written and electronic information that reflects the planned and delivered care for patients.
  • LEADERSHIP
    • Supports and contributes to the unit, department and organizational goals inclusive of the mission, vision and values.
    • Demonstrates advocacy and support on behalf of interprofessional teams and patients.
    • Delegates and supervises nursing staff in providing patient care and assumes leadership roles, e.g., charge nurse role. Participates in the development and implementation of quality activities.
  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
    • Serves as a preceptor or mentor.
    • Participates in professional development activities.
    • Incorporates evidence-based practice and research into patient care delivery.
