Critical Care Fellowship for the Adult ICUs, Pediatric ICU & PACU
If you are seeking the excitement and challenge of a critical care environment, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is offering a unique opportunity to train as a critical care nurse. This training fellowship includes:
Personalized orientation schedule, one-on-one preceptorship
Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (American Association of Critical Care Nurses)
American Heart Association certifications, as needed (BLS, ACLS, PALS)
Specialty content classes
All applicants must have at least two years of hospital-based, inpatient nursing experience.
Internal applicants must have been in their current position for at least one year.
All applicants will be required to commit to one year of full-time employment, following completion of the unit-based orientation.

Surgical Intensive Care Unit – C4-3:
MedStar Georgetown's 19-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) is staffed by highly dedicated and experienced critical care nurses and intensivists, complemented by skilled respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals trained to care for acutely ill surgical patients. Surgical specialties include transplant (liver, kidney, pancreas, and small bowel), thoracic surgery, plastic-reconstructive surgeries, vascular surgery, abdominal and ear, nose and throat surgery. The SICU is equipped to provide patients with state-of-the-art therapies at the bedside (continuous renal replacement), advanced hemodynamic monitoring, complex mechanical ventilation modes and medication infusions. The synergy between our professional expertise and our patient care model allows for clinical outcomes and results which are among the best in the nation. Unit leadership supports participation in shared governance, research, continuing education as well as national specialty certification. The SICU is the proud recipient of the 2015 AACN Gold Level Beacon Award for excellence in critical care.
Neurosurgical ICU – C6-3:
C6-3 is a 19-bed adult Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit. It is one of the few dedicated Neurosciences ICUs in Washington, DC. Clinical Nurses on C6-3 provide expert care for critically ill patients who have suffered stroke (hemorrhagic/ischemic), subarachnoid hemorrhage, subdural hematoma, complex spine and brain surgeries. Other common neurological diagnoses include meningitis, Guillain Barre syndrome and viral, infectious or autoimmune processes. In the past, C6-3 has been awarded both the Beacon Award for Nursing Excellence and the Nurse-Family Collaboration Award by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
Medical ICU – C4-2:
C4-2 is a 19-bed adult medical Intensive Care Unit that specializes in the management of complicated medical problems and utilize many advanced therapies, such as continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), post cardiac arrest hypothermia protocol and hemodynamic emergencies.
The MICU is the home of MedStar Georgetown’s rapid response nurse, known as the “Resource Nurse,” who provides critical assessment of decompensating patients throughout the hospital. Additionally, the MICU team functions as the CODE BLUE responders, managing emergent patient events with expertise and compassion. American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) with the Beacon Award for Nursing Excellence.
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit – C5-2:
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is a multidisciplinary 14-bed unit that provides care for critically ill patients with ages ranging from neonates to 23 years. The unit is supported by the full spectrum of medical and surgical services. The PICU specializes in the care of complex transplant patients, such as pediatric liver, kidney, small bowel and multivisceral organ transplants. As one of MedStar Georgetown's Centers of Excellence, the MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute draws pediatric patients from all around the world for our growing program, which recently introduced pediatric living donor transplants and domino transplants.
The PICU provides the highest level of care to critically ill medical and surgical patients including those requiring high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, continuous veno-venous hemofiltration and inhaled nitric oxide. A team of three pediatric intensivists supervises the care of all patients in partnership with residents, interns and attending physicians from other specialties.
The Surgery Center provides pre- and postoperative care for patients at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. The Surgery Center supports 23 operating rooms that deliver inpatient and outpatient services along the following service lines: orthopedics, neurosurgery, limb salvage, gynecological surgery, otolaryngology, robotics, urology, pediatrics, thoracic, and general surgery. Our highest priority is patient safety and providing exceptional patient care every day to every patient.
As a Surgery Center Nurse, you will coordinate the pre- and postoperative care of the surgical patient and ensure it is delivered safely in a fast-paced, complex environment. Surgery Center nurses provide 3 phases of care, including Pre-Op, Phase I Post Anesthesia Care and Phase II Post Anesthesia Care. Nurses are primarily assigned to one area per shift.
The Surgery Center values nursing education and professional development. As a result, newly hired nurses are provided a comprehensive orientation, designed by a clinical nurse educator and customized to the nurses’ skills and experience. Additionally, the clinical nurse educator coordinates ongoing educational programs designed to meet the unique needs of all Surgery Center associates, including nurses, nurse residents, clinical technicians, patient care associates and suite attendants.
7 West is MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s 16-bay Procedural PACU. Nurses on 7 West provide the highest quality postoperative care according to ASPAN standards for patients recovering from a variety of procedures including Interventional Radiology, Bronchoscopy and Cardiac Catheterization. Our highest priority is patient safety and providing exceptional patient care every day to every patient.
During the recovery of each patient, the 7 West nurses continually assess and address basic life-sustaining needs of the patient. Nursing care focuses on airway management, re-establishing hemodynamic stability with frequent surgical site and vital sign assessments and pain management. In collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, the nurse will use critical thinking to determine the next most appropriate level of care and facilitate the safe transfer of the patient to that location, including discharge home, return to an inpatient bed or transitioning to an intensive care setting.
7 West values nursing education and professional development. As a result, newly hired nurses are provided a comprehensive orientation, designed by a Clinical Educator and customized to the nurses’ skills and experience. Additionally, the Clinical Educator coordinates ongoing educational programs designed to meet the unique needs of all 7 West associates, including nurses, nurse practitioners, clinical technicians and patient care associates. The nurses on 7 West are very engaged, participating in collaborative governance at the unit and hospital level and demonstrating exceptional nursing skill through participation in the Clinical Advancement Program.
