General Summary of Position:
Acts as liaison throughout the hospital with regard to availability of beds to ensure the prompt and accurate placement/assignment of patients into a bed/unit. Works with Nursing and other clinical departments to determine the best placement of a patient based on the patient’s clinical needs and the availability of services. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.
Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
EDUCATION/TRAINING: Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing. BSN strongly preferred.
EXPERIENCE: A minimum of seven years of progressively more responsible job-related nursing experience exhibiting strong clinical skills and the ability to coordinate effectively. Bed utilization is preferred.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Current D.C. licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse. BLS required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Job requires a relatively high level of problem-solving to find solutions to difficult human, technical or clinical problems.

Acts as a liaison between and physicians and other MGUH departments to facilitate the prompt and accurate assignment of patients into beds, resolve operational issues and make recommendations to improve access to MGUH.
Works with nursing to determine availability of bed(s) on the units, balancing unit census, patient acuity and staff availability to meet patient’s needs. Confers with Case Management, attending physicians or their designee, ancillary department representatives, Nursing and other departments to strategize the most efficient use of patient beds.
Assigns beds based on patient’s diagnosis, physician specialty and service, and bed and support availability via Pre-Admit Tracking System.
Updates Patient Access Associate when necessary. Maintains own knowledge of bed availability by routinely visiting units/floors.
Facilitates daily staffing huddles by reporting the “State of the House” in regards to bed demand and bed availability.
Identifies, recommends and develops/implements quality assurance systems for improvement in access. Develops systems, procedures and/or policies with the various departments throughout MGUH to facilitate communication and expeditious patient placement/flow.
Develops and presents in-services/educational programs for nursing units, administrative support staff, Environmental Services, and other department personnel with the goal of fostering better communication and collaboration and improved patient flow.
Generates reports on bed assignment(s), turnover time, etc., for supervisor and management. Analyzes reports and gives recommendations to improve service/access. Reviews daily admission and clinical procedure reports and collaborates with other departments for efficient of bed flow.
Informs Director, Patient Placement, Flow and Throughput and other identified stakeholders of significant events, problems, any corrective actions taken, and/or suggested approach. Provides written documentation/reports as needed.
Maintains own knowledge of current trends and developments in the field of nursing, nursing management and bed management by reading literature and attending related seminars and conferences.
Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
