Clinical Educator: Pediatric ICU and Pediatric Transplant Unit
Provides educational leadership for professional nursing practice in alignment with the mission, vision, values, and goals of the Division of Nursing/GUH and Magnet® designation. Exemplifies and promotes excellence in education, practice and research through leadership and mentorship of nursing staff and through collaborative multidisciplinary relationships within the medical center, as well as throughout local, regional and national arenas. Uses adult learning principles and instructional strategies to assess, design, implement, and evaluate continuing nursing education programs that enhance and promote clinical competency and standards of care. Promotes, disseminates and integrates evidence-based practice, performance improvement and nursing research into clinical practice. Supports and facilitates certification of clinical nurses. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.
Pediatric ICU - C5-2
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is a multidisciplinary, 14-bed unit that provides care for critically ill patients with ages ranging from neonates to 23 years. The unit is supported by the full spectrum of medical and surgical services. The PICU specializes in the care of complex transplant patients, such as pediatric liver, kidney, small bowel and multivisceral organ transplants. As one of MedStar Georgetown's Centers of Excellence, the MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute draws pediatric patients from all around the world for our growing program, which recently introduced pediatric living donor transplants and domino transplants.
The PICU provides the highest level of care to critically ill medical and surgical patients, including those requiring high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, continuous veno-venous hemofiltration and inhaled nitric oxide. A team of three pediatric intensivists supervises the care of all patients in partnership with with residents, interns and attending physicians from other specialties. Pediatric Transplant Unit - C5-1
C5-1 is a 15-bed, state-of-the-art Pediatric Transplant Unit, serving patients receiving care for lifesaving organ transplants, including liver, small bowel and multi-organ transplants (liver, stomach, small bowel, kidney, pancreas and colon). As one of only seven centers that perform pediatric small bowel and multivisceral organ transplants, the Transplant Center for Children is the nation's third-largest transplant program. In fact, we perform five times as many transplants as the average transplant program. Our Pediatric Transplant Team provides complex medical and surgical care for patients regionally, nationally and internationally. Our team is notable for its high success rates, history of innovation, cohesive teamwork, and family-friendly approach to the transplant process.
The nurses on C5-1 work in collaboration with physicians, registered dieticians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, social workers, physical/occupational/speech therapists, clinical technicians, and child-life specialists to deliver high-quality care, transplant-focused care. Through the help of our full-time Clinical Educator, our nurses are trained to care for patients requiring telemetry monitoring, high-risk medications and in-depth discharge teaching. The nursing team on C5-1 is a highly educated and motivated group of professionals who actively participate in shared governance and continuing education and who attend regional and national conferences. In 2015, C5-1 was proud to receive the Patient Safety Award for achieving one year without a CLABSI.
Graduate of an NLN-accredited school of nursing.
Bachelors' degree required; Master's degree in Nursing Clinical Nurse Specialist preferred.
Certification in Nursing Education or clinical area within one year of hire.
Current D.C. licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.
Five years of clinical experience, including two years in a university teaching hospital. Clinical education experience desirable.
Role-model excellence in professional nursing.
Excellent communication and critical thinking skills with a solid clinical background as it pertains to the specialty area.
Ability to assess needs of learners, design curricula, develop education programs, teach and guide learners, and evaluate learning to implement evidence-based practice and research, using adult learning principles.
Competency in computer technology such as, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and other technology for teaching purposes.
