General Summary of Position:
The incumbent in this position develops, coordinates, implements, and evaluates all educational programs and activities for all staff in the Department of Perioperative Services. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

MedStar Georgetown Operating Room
The MGUH Operating Room houses 23 suites and is staffed 24 hours, 7 days per week. We provide a wide range of surgical services, including Transplant, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Otolaryngology, Plastic Surgery, General Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Robotic Surgery, Urology, Gynecology, Pediatrics, Vascular Surgery, and Ophthalmology.

  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Master's degree in Nursing, Education and/or related field.
  • EXPERIENCE: Three years of clinical experience in an OR with at least one year of teaching experience. Supervisory experience desirable.
  • LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Current D.C. license as a Registered Professional Nurse. Current BLS certification.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Current knowledge of perioperative nursing. Knowledge and skill in the area of program development, adult learning theories as applied to the OR setting, and A/V equipment. Must be able to facilitate individual and group dynamics. Must also have effective interviewing skills, be flexible and able to work under stress, act as a resource person, and work with all levels of staff.

Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Designs, implements and evaluates orientation, education and training programs and/or activities for department staff, other hospital staff, students, and postgraduate nurse interns.
  • Designs, implements and evaluates all educational in-services for departmental staff. Conducts competency training and ensures annual educational records are current.
  • Evaluates quality of professional nursing care services rendered within the department and recommends changes as needed. Maintains clinical expertise as a perioperative nurse.
  • Coordinates, facilitates and evaluates nursing research protocols underway in the department.
  • Maintains departmental educational resources and information regarding continuing educational opportunities for all staff, including films, tapes, library materials, program listings, and computer-assisted instruction.
  • Participates in personnel management functions for the Perioperative Nurse Internship Program and Student Surgical Tech training to include, but not limited to, interviewing, scheduling, coaching, counseling, orienting, evaluating and recommending termination of employees in training positions as delegated by or with the Department Director's approval.
  • Participates in monitoring, controlling and assigning operational and capital budgets and expenses related to educational services.
  • Participates in department administrative planning sessions and meetings.
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
