General Summary of Position:
A nurse is responsible for providing competent professional nursing care using the nursing process. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

Become an Apheresis Nurse!

MedStar Georgetown is currently seeking experienced nurses for the Apheresis Unit.
 
This six-week training program begins in May/June 2019 and includes the following elements:
  • Personalized orientation schedule and preceptorship
  • Optia Apheresis System training (Terumo BCT)
  • Apheresis exchange and collection procedure training
  • Advanced training to photopheresis

The Apheresis Center is FACT and AABB-accredited. Our collaborative team provides exchange procedures to patients with hematological and neurological diseases, including TTP, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, and sickle cell disease. The Apheresis Center also performs peripheral blood stem cell and cellular therapy collections for MGUH Blood and Cellular Therapy Program, as well as the National Marrow Donor Program. Photopheresis therapy is an ultraviolet light therapy provided for patients with graft vs. host disease secondary to transplant.

Nurses on 2 South are active in collaborative governance throughout the hospital and are encouraged to participate in professional development opportunities through coaching and mentoring.

In order to qualify for a position in the Apheresis Fellowship, you must have at least one year of hospital-based, inpatient nursing experience. In addition, internal applicants must have worked in their current department for at least one year as of April 1, 2019.

Qualifications:
  • EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING REQUIRED: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor’s degree or higher in Nursing preferred.
  • LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATION: Current D.C. license as a Registered Professional Nurse upon hire. Certification in Basic Life Support. Certification in specialty or related specialty preferred.
  • EXPERIENCE: To meet unit criteria, at least two (2) years of recent acute care experience. Experience with Cerner (SurgiNet) computerized charting system is preferred.
  • SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Ability to perform the nursing technologies. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to set priorities and work under stress.

    • Communicates and collaborates with interprofessional groups to ensure coordination, continuity and safe care.
    • Communicates verbal information and documents written and electronic information that reflects the planned and delivered care for patients.
  • LEADERSHIP
    • Supports and contributes to the unit, department and organizational goals inclusive of the mission, vision and values.
    • Demonstrates advocacy and support on behalf of interprofessional teams and patients.
    • Delegates and supervises nursing staff in providing patient care and assumes leadership roles, e.g., charge nurse role. Participates in the development and implementation of quality activities.
  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
    • Serves as a preceptor or mentor.
    • Participates in professional development activities.
    • Incorporates evidence-based practice and research into patient care delivery.
