General Summary of Position:
The incumbent is a registered professional nurse practitioner who is responsible for providing professional nursing services that supplement and complement the professional nursing staff and the medical staff's delivery of patient care services. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

Qualifications:
  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: Graduate of a nurse practitioner program from an accredited achool of nursing. Master's degree in Nursing required.
  • EXPERIENCE: Experience in acute care, perianesthesia care and/or intensive care.
  • LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Current RN/Advanced Practitioner licensure in the District of Columbia. Current certification in Acute Care, Family Care or Adult Nurse Practitioner. Current CPR certification. Current ACLS certification. Credentialed as a member of the MGUH professional staff. Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification highly preferred.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Judgment and leadership skills. Familiarity/experience with perioperative/perianesthesia process and physiological monitors desirable. Excellent interpersonal skills. Must be mature and able to set priorities and work independently. Must be able to articulate procedures to patients and families. Excellent physical assessment skills.
Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • CLINICAL PRACTICE: Performs clinical functions during the post-procedural phase of care including:
    • Performing post-procedural evaluation, including physical examination, ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic testing, obtaining informed consent for procedures, and providing patient education.
    • Providing comprehensive post-procedural and postoperative care utilizing protocols and assisting physicians/house staff in ongoing patient management as needed.
    • Notifying appropriate physician(s) of abnormal test findings and participating in defining and implementing the plan of care of response to findings.
    • Participating in interpretation of diagnostic studies as part of the multidisciplinary team.
    • Providing case management services to patients and coordinating discharge planning and patient education in collaboration with appropriate physicians and multidisciplinary teams.
    • Maintaining open communication with referring physicians by providing patient updates and recommendations for discharge planning.
    • Participating in and assisting with research protocols and patient recruitment for studies approved to be conducted at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
    • Providing patient and family education about procedures performed, ongoing care needs related to procedures, and disease management.
    • Participating in performance improvement activities by developing evidence-based protocols and guidelines in collaboration with other members of the team; attending monthly Morbidity and Mortality Conference; and participating in other departmental meetings and conferences regularly.
    • Conducting follow-up contacts with patients, as appropriate.
  • COMMUNICATION
    • Communicates clearly, accurately and effectively to peers, nurses, physicians, patients, visitors, and other departments to facilitate patient care.
    • Demonstrates a team approach by utilizing open communication and mutual respect with peers, nurses, physicians, patients, visitors, and other departments.
  • LEADERSHIP
    • Supports unit, department and organizational goals.
    • Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of performance improvement and research activities.
  • EDUCATION
    • Participates in the orientation and education of department personnel as required by unit needs.
    • Participates in educational programs.
    • Incorporates evidence-based practice into patient-centered care and outcomes.
    • Exemplifies the SPIRIT Values in all activities.
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
