General Summary of Position:
Evaluates and manages care of patients undergoing cardiac procedures, including history taking and physical examination, ordering and interpreting diagnostic testing, and clinical management of post-procedures. Coordinates discharge planning. Provides case management services to patients in the Interventional Cardiology Service. Conducts non-invasive cardiac diagnostic testing in collaboration with attending cardiologists. Assists with various clinical protocols and projects. Holds independent patient clinics. Performs complete medical history and examinations. Administers medications and orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures. Writes orders in charts and gives verbal telephone orders to qualified professional nurses. Provides education to patients and families as needed. Reviews laboratory reports and other diagnostic reports. Provides telephone coverage for clinical problems called in by patients, nurses, caregivers, and others. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

Qualifications:
  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: Graduate of a Nurse Practitioner program from an accredited school of nursing. MS degree required.
  • EXPERIENCE: Minimum of two years of critical care nursing experience. Cardiology/cardiovascular aurgery/electrophysiology experience preferred.
  • LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Current D.C. licensure as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner. Current certification as an Acute Care or Adult Nurse Practitioner. Credentialed as a member of the MGUH professional staff.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Ability to deal effectively with patients, attending physicians, referring physicians, and staff. Excellent organizational and communication skills. Computer skills, including knowledge of Windows, MS Word, Excel, Access, and Internet, helpful.

Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs pre-procedure and preoperative evaluation, including taking medical history and performing physical examination, ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic testing, obtaining informed consent for procedures, and providing patient education.
  • Provides comprehensive post-procedural and postoperative care utilizing protocols and assists physicians/house staff in ongoing patient management as needed.
  • Provides case management services to patients and coordinates discharge planning and patient education in collaboration with appropriate physicians and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Maintains open communication with referring physicians by providing patient updates and recommendations for discharge planning.
  • Assists with various research protocols and patient recruitment for studies approved to be conducted at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
  • Attends research protocol training meetings and Scientific Sessions as appropriate.
  • Provides patient and family education about cardiovascular/cardiology services, procedures performed and disease management.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities by developing evidence-based protocols and guidelines in collaboration with other members of the team; attending monthly Morbidity and Mortality Conference; and participating in other departmental meetings and conferences regularly.
  • Notifies appropriate physician(s) of abnormal test findings.
  • Participates in interpretation of cardiac electrophysiology procedures.
  • Assists physicians and house staff with cardiac electrophysiology procedures.
  • Holds independent patient clinics. Obtains complete medical history and physical data on patients. Performs physical examinations pertinent to the patient's medical history and complaint. Orders and evaluates appropriate evaluatory diagnostic studies and procedures.
  • Interprets and synthesizes data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan and procedures. Records and documents assessment data, interventions, results, and patient outcomes, per established protocols. Participates in follow-up of patients who have been seen in clinic, including notification of lab results and change of medications.
  • Triages patient telephone inquiries and provides consultation, as needed. Collaborates with physician in evaluating and managing the acute and long-term medical needs of patients.
  • Administers medications and injections, as directed.
  • Exemplifies Patient Experience service standards and SPIRIT Values, and actively participates in Patient Safety standards and tasks.
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
