General Summary of Position:
Evaluates and manages care of inpatients for the Gastroenterology service. Performs completed medical histories and examinations on patients in the hospital. Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures. Writes orders in charts and gives verbal telephone orders as needed. Reviews laboratory reports, radiographic reports, other diagnostic reports, and consultant reports. Provides telephone coverage for clinical problems called in by patients, nurses, caregivers, and others. These functions are performed in accordance all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.
EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING REQUIRED: BSN from an accredited school of nursing and successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program.
LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATION: Must have state license in D.C. as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner. Certified as an Acute Care Adult Nurse Practitioner. Credentialed as a member of the MGUH professional staff. BLS-certified.
EXPERIENCE: Three years of nursing experience preferred (as an RN or NP or combination), inclusive of at least one to two years of direct gastroenterology experience preferred.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice and medical care to give to and evaluate patients. Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care. Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care. Skill in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public. Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency situations. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs pre-procedure evaluation, including taking medical history and performing physical examination, ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic testing, obtaining informed consent for procedures, and providing education.
Provides comprehensive post-procedural care utilizing protocols and responsible for ongoing patient management as needed for hospital patients.
Provides discharge planning and patient education in collaboration with appropriate physicians/clinical team.
Maintains open communication with referring physicians by providing patient updates and recommendations for discharge planning.
Provides patient and family education about Gastroenterology services.
Assesses acute medical problems on hospitalized patients.
Coordinates procedures from inpatient rounding to be placed on inpatient schedule within appropriate time frame. Admits patients from the Emergency Room.
Instructs patients and family regarding medications and treatment instructions.
Performs other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
